UK Refractory Products Market Development Report

After researching the UK Refractory Products Market Development and taking into account various other factors, the following major conclusions can be drawn from the report published by MBD (Manchester, England):

Market Review 1999-2003

The UK market for refractory products increased during each year, with the exception of a decline of 7% in 1999. Between 1999 and 2003, sales increased by an estimated 16% in nominal terms, taking the value to £359.9 million in the last year.

The sector for siliceous earth products includes markets such as bricks, blocks, slabs, panels, tiles, hollow bricks, cylinder shells and pipes and represents a high volume, low value sector. As such, margins tend to be relatively low. Between 1999 and 2003 this market increased by 87%, taking sales to £35.7 million in 2003.

The market for other constructional products increased during the first three years, peaking at £48.2 million in 2001. However, demand declined in the following two years to £40.4 million in 2003, representing overall nominal growth of 12%.

The market value for cements, mortars and concretes fluctuated somewhat, peaking at £78.5 million in 2001. Despite annual fluctuations, sales increased by a nominal 4% between 1999 and 2003, reaching £68.8 million in 2003.

Market Forecast 2004-2008

The market is expected to fluctuate, albeit at moderate levels. MBD anticipates sales of refractory products to decline during the first half of the forecast period - to a low of £349.4 million in 2006. However, sales are expected to increase in subsequent years, reaching £362 million in 2008, representing an overall increase of 3% in real terms.

Demand for siliceous earth products is expected to increase during the majority of the forecast period, increasing by 5% to £35.1 million in 2008.

Despite annual fluctuations, the value of the other constructional products sector is forecast to increase by 2% in real terms, from £41.6 million in 2004 to £42.4 million in 2008.

Within the forecast period, demand for cements, mortars and concretes is expected to decline year on year. Between 2004 and 2008, sales are expected to decline by 7% in real terms to £60.8 million in 2008.
