IoM Announces its Third Materials Congress

'Increasing Wealth and Quality of Life' is the theme announced by The Institute of Materials for its third Materials Congress. This important biennial event in the materials calendar will be held in London from 9-11 April 2002.

The technical programme of Materials Congress 2002 will demonstrate the vast scope of materials science and technology and will focus its impact on everyday life. The three-day event will provide a forum for those working at the cutting edge of materials research in industry, academia and research organisations. The programme will combine six major plenary lectures and six parallel sessions of oral presentations, with an emphasis on the newer and emerging materials topics including photonics, biomaterials, nanotechnology, sensors, sustainability, modelling, plus clean technologies such as fuel cells, energy storage and batteries. Papers for the technical sessions are currently being invited.

A full and varied supporting programme for the wider materials community will include education-related and technicians' workshops, an exhibition, Younger Members' events, as well as innovation symposia for representatives of government, the media and financial markets. The final of the IoM National Lecture Competition will be one of a range of social events.

Materials Congress 2002 has been endorsed by the Federation of Materials Societies as an event in the Topical Euromat series and, as such, will have a major European dimension. The congress programme will be linked in particular to the UK Materials Foresight programme and the materials research activities of the Engineering Council and Physical Sciences Research Council, who are both supporting the event.

The venue will be Carlton House Terrace (London SW1) where the event will be hosted by the IoM in conjunction with the Industrial Society, the Institute of Pathologists and The Royal Society.
