Royal Ceramic Gift Goes on Show

The people of North Staffordshire now have an opportunity to see a unique example of the excellence of the ceramic industry with the announcement that the Golden Jubilee Service is on display in the Potteries Shopping Centre, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent until 9 March 2003. The Queen's Dessert Service was produced by the British Ceramic Industry to commemorate the Golden Jubilee, as a gift to her from the industry and the people of Stoke-on-Trent.

The Jubilee Dessert Service includes presentation and centrepieces as well as full dessert service, a total of 93 pieces.

The service was commissioned following a design challenge. A dessert service was chosen to meet the requirements of the royal household and allow the designers more freedom of expression, setting a style typifying the pleasure and value of dining and entertaining. The overriding intention was to extol the excellence of the UK ceramics industry and the use of its products.

The service is a truly cooperative effort across the whole spectrum of manufacturers and institutions within the broader UK industry. All members of the British Ceramic Confederation (BCC) have contributed towards the project, while the Ceramic Industry Forum has also given its support.

A group of manufacturers and suppliers have worked to take the design forward and bring it to realisation. Staffordshire University and The Hothouse (a City of Stoke-on-Trent design initiative) have contributed their expertise and facilities to combine the best and latest designs and reproduction technology with the necessary inspiration. The finished pieces and the decoration have produced a service, says BCC, in which North Staffordshire can take true pride.
