Latest research and development into recycling, recovery and re-use in the chemicals and plastics industries

This meeting (26 April 2001, Commonwealth Institute, London) will disseminate the results of 29 research projects of relevance to waste minimisation within the chemicals, rubber and plastics industries. Many of the projects also have relevance to the automotive sector: five of the projects, for example, relate to tyre recycling. Others include the removal of chemicals from effluent streams so that both the chemicals and process water may be recycled. The projects include a broad range of recycling methods such as adsorption, membrane separation, chemical reactions, pyrolosis and cryogenics, as well as developing methodologies for minimising environmental impacts.

The projects were funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as part of the Waste Minimisation through Recycling, Re-use and Recovery in Industry Research Programme. The total money spent on these projects by the two organisations amounted to £6.2m. In all cases the projects had significant industrial support.

The meeting will provide the opportunity to discuss the project findings with both industrial and academic partners and will provide an overview of the programme's relevance from the regulatory, industrial and academic viewpoint. The meeting will conclude with a workshop on methods of further exploitation, including current funding routes.
