Manufacturing Debate Welcomed by UK's Main Trade Union

The Transport & General Workers' Union (T&G), the UK's largest manufacturing trade union, welcomed the adjournment debate on manufacturing at Westminster Hall on 5 February 2002. Peter Booth, T&G national organiser for manufacturing, said Paul Flynn MP's initiative was to be praised.

He added: "Today's debate is an important one. Paul Flynn has raised the spectre of job losses as they have affected the Welsh economy to start the debate that will, I am sure, reflect the concerns that the T&G have.

"The UK's under-investment in manufacturing is a continuing cause for concern. If we are to compete effectively in today's global markets with all the issues of over capacity those markets raise, the UK must address those issues properly.

"We remain concerned that in the current climate affecting manufacturing, multinational companies can take advantage of the situation where UK workers are cheap, quick and easy to sack and so move their operations out of this country with a devastating effect on local areas."
