BAU 2005 Gives Building Sector Strong Boost

Messe Muenchen GmbH (Munich, Germany) said that its BAU 2005 exhibition gave the building and construction industry new impetus and confidence. Despite a generally weak situation in the industry in Germany and further afield, over 190,000 visitors came along to Europe's largest building materials fair, an increase of 10,000 over two years ago.

Messe Muenchen said that the six-day fair was a great success, with what it said were "full halls and a sometimes euphoric atmosphere". BAU was also able to further strengthen its international profile. The visitors came from a total of 134 countries: two years ago it was only 99 countries. There was a noticeable rise in visitor numbers from the Middle East and East Asia. In the case of visitors from Iran (877), China (719) and Japan (602), the increase was particularly strong.

Eastern Europe and the newly admitted EU states were also well represented. Large contingents arrived from Russia (796), Slovenia (885), Czech Republic (748), Turkey (659), Hungary (436), Lithuania (379), Poland (366) and the Ukraine (219). In total, around 23,000 of the visitors came to BAU from outside Germany.

Many exhibiting companies reported making many promising new contacts at the fair and engaging in very open, positive talks. Dieter Schaefer, Chairman of Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer AG said: "One phenomenon at BAU is that the fair is used by many as an opportunity for placing orders. Specific requirements were discussed and orders then placed".

Norbert Bargmann, Managing Director of Messe Muenchen, summed things up: "BAU has once again proven itself to be a top event in the European building and construction community. We have succeeded in bringing together in a highly effective way the supply and demand sides of the industry. BAU reaches all relevant target groups".
