US Gypsum Strengthens Ceramic Tile Backer Board Business

US Gypsum has announced the opening of its new DUROCK brand cement board manufacturing line at the company's Baltimore, MD, USA plant.

The high speed line was built to meet the increasing demand for high quality, special purpose board that is used with ceramic tile and in exterior finish system applications. The company said that the addition of the new production line strengthened US Gypsum's position as the nation's leading cement board tile backer manufacturer.

The 90,000 square foot cement board line expansion created 35 new positions at the Baltimore plant. The plant also manufactures US Gypsum's SHEETROCK gypsum panels and plaster products.

The company now operates four cement board manufacturing facilities, with the other ones being in Detroit, MI; New Orleans, LA; and in Santa Fe Springs, CA.

The company's Marketing Manager, Jim Reicherts, said: "The popularity of ceramic tile in both residential and commercial construction, plus the growing awareness of the critical performance benefits that cement board delivers, have significantly increased the demand for cement board in the past few years".
