Trades Union Sponsors Health & Safety Course

One of the actions in the UK's 'Pledge' Action Plan is to train health and safety representatives and review their effectiveness and, with this in mind, the Ceramic & Allied Trades Union (CATU) has sponsored a health and safety training course.

Twelve members of CATU, who are elected to sit on factory safety committees, have now completed the course. Those taking part in the pilot were extremely enthusiastic and positive about the issues covered. This was also the first course of its kind to be run by a trades union in the UK.

The course is run over three days and covers:

* the role and functions of safety representatives.
* the trade union's approach to health and safety.
* the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations and application of the law.
* health and safety committees.
* safety representatives' rights.
* carrying out risk assessments.

CATU National Organiser Mick Young said: "CATU is leading the field by organising these health and safety awareness courses for union members. We are proud that their contents are likely to be taken up by other much bigger national unions".
