PMI Trust Fund 2001 Awards

The Pottery Mechanics Institute (PMI) Trust Fund has announced the winners of its 2001 Bursary Awards. Two young people benefit each year from these awards, made in the Undergraduate/Postgraduate (Academic) and Industry categories.

The Industrial Award was won by Lianne Harrison of Daniel Platt & Sons Ltd for her innovative work on stain pigments to coloured tiles. One of her briefs was to work actively in pursuit of maximum quantity for less cost, whilst retaining the quality of the tile product. The new tile product range will have huge commercial advantages, enabling distributors to offer a greater selection at affordable prices.

The Academic Award was won by Julian Jones from the Department of Materials at Imperial College, London. Julian presented the PMI Trust Panel with his work on '3D Bioactive Foam Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering'. These are made from bioactive calcia-silica based glasses produced via the sol-gel method. The aim of the foams is to provide a resorbable scaffold that will not only act as a template for bone repair, but also release the required active species that can turn on the genes responsible for growing new healthy bone.

Julian left for the USA on 3 November on an extensive trip which was scheduled to include a period helping to set up a pilot plant for mass production of foams to ISO 9000 standard at US Biomaterials in Alachua in Florida.
