MTC to Showcase 104-Pin Ceramic Feed-Thru

Morgan Technical Ceramics (MTC) - comprised of Morgan Advanced Ceramics and Morgan Electro Ceramics - will showcase its new 104-pin ceramic feed-thru at MD&M West at the Anaheim Convention Center, CA, USA from 31 January to 2 February 2006.

The ceramic feed-thru, which is used in drug delivery applications, is the first to house 104 pins in a 2.5cm diameter and enables medical device manufacturers to design smaller, less intrusive devices. Each pin is capable of activating a different combination of switches, enabling medical staff to control delivery of a greater number or more complex combination of drugs to the patient at any given time.

MTC's advanced and highly repeatable machining techniques allow for the design and manufacture of this component. In order to minimise the risk of drug leakage, pure gold is used as the braze filler material between the alumina ceramic and metal pins, forming a secure hermetic seal. To minimise the overall size of the device, the ceramic is machined to a thickness of only 0.11cm.

MTC has been working with medical equipment manufacturers for more than 20 years in developing a range of different sized biocompatible feed-thrus that suit various applications, such as implantable pacemakers, defibrillators and cochlear implants.
