Materials measurement programmes

Two new booklets are available outlining all the research projects within the 'Characterisation and Performance of Materials' and the 'Measurement and Processability of Materials' programmes of work underway at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Both programmes are supported by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The 'Characterisation of Performance of Materials' programme covers:
  • biomaterials
  • functional materials
  • polymeric materials
  • ceramics and hardmetals
  • coatings

  • Specific projects in the 'Measurement and Processability of Materials' programme cover:
  • liquid metal processing (metal refining, melting and solidification)
  • metal forming (metal forging, rolling, pressing and extrusion)
  • plastic processing (manufacture of plastics components/films from both thermoset and thermoplastic materials)
  • powder processing (metallic powders, refractory materials and engineered ceramics)
  • electronic materials (passive materials required in the fabrication of electronic circuitry)
