January Meeting on Ceramic Materials - ESIS
The European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) Task Group on Ceramic Materials is holding its next meeting over two half days during 24-25 January 2002 at the National Physical Laboratory, Queens Road, Teddington, Middlesex, England. The meeting will consist of two distinct topics:
- 24 January - A review of the work to date to establish a properties and performance database for a commercial silicon nitride product via collaborative action in Europe.
- 25 January - A seminar on the theme of 'Damage Accumulation in Brittle Materials', comprising a series of short presentations covering all forms of wear, chipping, impact and machining damage and methods for characterising it, both volunteered and invited.
The provisional programme includes:
- Drop-weight impact damage initiation in ceramic materials.
- Use of Raman spectroscopy to detect residual machining stress in alumina.
- Abrasion/corrosion wear in ceramics and hardmetals.
- Multi-pass low-load scratch testing of brittle materials.
- Indentation fatigue in PZTs.
The meeting is open to non-ESIS group members and is an opportunity to hear of the work of ESIS and of the NPL programme in hard materials.
The cost of the event is £30 (50 Euros), to be paid on arrival, and includes lunch and refreshments. Attendance on 24 January or 25 January only is at half the fee.
