Clean Coal Technologies Development Announced

FT Solutions LLC (a joint venture of Rentech Inc) and Headwaters Technology Innovation Group (HTI) - a wholly owned subsidiary of Headwaters Inc - announced on 26 November 2004 that FT Solutions was completing the preliminary design of a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) gas-to-liquids (GTL) pilot plant capable of producing up to 10 barrels per day of liquid hydrocarbon products, depending on the operating conditions selected. The pilot plant will be designed to utilise FT Solutions' proprietary and patented iron-based catalysts contributed by Rentech and HTI. The pilot plant will be located at Gas Technology Institute's (GTI) coal gasification test facility located in Des Plaines, IL, USA.

GTI, with more than 60 years of experience, is the leading US research, development and training organisation serving the natural gas industry. More than 800 patents have resulted from GTI research and more than 400 products incorporating GTI-developed technology have been introduced.

The primary purpose of the pilot plant is to provide representative quantities of liquid hydrocarbon products for testing by potential end users. In addition, it will demonstrate the integration of the FT module using synthesis gas produced by a coal-fed gasifier owned and operated by GTI. The current schedule calls for the FT pilot plant to be ready for initial start-up operations by the third quarter of 2005.
