Major mineral contract win for Tarmac Central

The specialist minerals division of Tarmac Central has won a major two-year contract to supply ground silica to leading sanitaryware producer Jacuzzi UK, formerly Spring Ram Bathrooms.

The Staffordshire based minerals operation will process 2000 tonnes of the mineral each year and deliver it to Jacuzzi UK's Bradford plant. The ground silica is used in the manufacture of ceramic sinks and lavatories.

"We take silica sand and grind it to a specified fineness. It is then turned into a suspension in water, for ease of transportation and use within the manufacturing process," explained Tarmac Central site manager Martyn Barber. "We are delighted to have won the contract, in the face of tough competition."

Added David Kelly, technical operations manager at Jacuzzi UK: "In an increasingly competitive market place it is necessary to keep tight controls on raw material spending. Tarmac have provided an alternative source of silica sand, allowing us to keep costs down while maintaining product quality."
