Hike in Profits at Somany Ceramics


Somany Ceramics Ltd, one of the leading tile manufacturers in India, has announced its financial results for the quarter ended 30 June 2009. The profit before tax recorded an increase of 105.5% rising to Rs 5.28 crore from Rs 2.57 crore in the same period last year.

The company reported an increase of 19% in net sales to Rs 99.59 crore against that of Rs 83.75 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Commenting on the company’s performance, Abhishek Somany, Joint Managing Director, said: “We are satisfied with our performance considering the slowdown in the Indian economy. It has been possible due to our increased focus on value added sales, aggressive marketing and commitment towards setting new standards in quality and design of our products”.

Speaking on the future outlook for the company, he said: “Forging ahead with our expansion plans, we are enhancing our production capacity by 3 million square metres at our manufacturing plant in Kasar (Haryana), which would be commissioned by the end of current financial year”.

Somany Ceramics Ltd, flagship company of the H L Somany Group, is one of the leading players in the tiles and sanitaryware industry. Incorporated as Somany Pilkington’s in 1969 by Shri H L Somany, it later came to be known as Somany Ceramics Limited. In 1971, the very first unit of Somany started production in Kassar, Haryana and the second unit was set up in 1981 in Kadi, Gujarat.

Somany achieved Government recognition for its R&D Department in 1996 (a first in the tile industry) and was the first tile company to be awarded ISO 9002 certification in 1998. It also achieved ISO 14001 in 1999 for environment friendly facilities. Somany also holds exclusive rights for Veilcraft Technology, which renders a specially treated coating that protects each tile against abrasion, scratches and stains.
