Lecture by Colin Sheaf: Ceramics of the Sea - Four shipwrecked cargoes

Venue - Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK

In this lecture, Colin Sheaf, Bonhams' Asian Art expert, will be exploring the discoveries of four Chinese porcelain cargoes that sunk in the South China Sea.
For more than a 1000 years, ceramics had been manufactured in China for export to foreign markets. This export trade hugely increased in volume and value during the sixteenth century, when European nations began to compete with Islamic purchasers for fine Chinese blue and white decorative and functional porcelain. The recently discovered sunken cargoes, sealed time capsules of these 'export' porcelains, provide unique insights into ceramic production in and around Jingdezhen, as Chinese potters responded increasingly directly to Western requirements. In this lecture illustrated with vibrant slides, Colin Sheaf explores changing ceramic technology and design in China.

Colin Sheaf joined Christie's London Asian Art department in 1976, specialising in Chinese ceramics and hardstones. Author and lecturer, he is also one of two Trustees of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art and is on the Council of the Oriental Ceramic Society.

Wine will be served after the lecture.
