Salem Receives ASTM's Advanced Ceramics Award

ASTM International Committee C28 on Advanced Ceramics has given its Advanced Ceramics Award to Dr Jonathan Salem, a materials research engineer at the
NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH, USA. Dr Salem, an ASTM Fellow
and Award of Merit winner, received the honour for his continuous and outstanding contributions to the work of C28 subcommittees, sections and task groups.

Dr Salem has made important contributions to standards characterising advanced ceramics and to designing components and structures with advanced ceramics. For his significant work he previously received C28 Awards of Appreciation.

A prolific author of research papers in the area of mechanical characterisation and modelling of the thermomechanical behaviour of advanced ceramics, he advocates C28 activities throughout his publications. He has served as an organiser and co-chair of a symposium on 'Fracture Resistance Testing of Monolithic and Composite Brittle Materials' as well as an editor for the resulting book.

In his position at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Dr Salem is involved with quality control, mechanical testing of brittle materials under both ambient and elevated temperature conditions, and life prediction modelling using both deterministic and probabilistic methods.
