Royal Doulton Hosts Qualifications Success

Caroline Highland (Director of Student and External Relations, Stoke-on-Trent College) and Martin Poppleton (Director of Operations, Royal Doulton) recently hosted a successful presentation of educational achievement awards at the current Royal Doulton headquarters in Minton House.

32 students received their National Certificate in Ceramic Manufacturing and Technology (ONCs). 25 of this group were from Royal Doulton factory sites at John Beswick, Royal Doulton Nile Street and Baddeley Green, with the others coming from Jesse Shirley & Son, H&R Johnson Tiles, Emery Colours, Royal Crown Derby and Spode.

The next group to be presented received Higher National Certificates (HNCs) - they came from Jesse Shirley & Son, Johnson Matthey, Furlong Mills, Spode, Global Ceramic Materials and CERAM Research.

Finally, Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) were presented to students from Imerys, Ferro, Armitage Shanks, Spode, Johnson Matthey and Jesse Shirley & Son.

The students carried out a 2-year, part-time programme, attending the Burslem Campus of Stoke-on-Trent College, sessions comprising one afternoon and early evening together with Open or Distance Learning material. They had been able to submit work via e-mail as well as manufacturing products from raw materials state to finished product.

Programme Lecturer and Team Leader Len Dale said: "I would like to thank clay producers such as WBB, Goonvean and Imerys (ECC) for their support of the students' residential trips to Devon and Cornwall. These trips produce real team-building exercises and friendships develop across many sectors of the Ceramic Industry. I hope that the students will remember their time at Stoke-on-Trent's Burslem Campus not only for the knowledge that they have obtained, but also for the enjoyable learning atmosphere that I and my colleague Richard Davies have tried to maintain".

Graham Morley, Head of the School of Engineering gave a vote of thanks to Royal Doulton for hosting the presentation and tour of new exhibits, and added a special vote of thanks to Lisa Massey and Nicola Mathers from Royal Doulton's Human Resources Department for their part in instigating the company's involvement in the ceramic training programme.
