Radar for Bulk Material Level Measurement

A new range of two-wire, radar based level instruments for monitoring bulk tanks containing liquids or solids has been introduced by Hycontrol (Redditch, Worcs, England). The Reflex Radar range consists of three types of TDR and FMCW level instruments suitable for both contact and non-contact level measurement of aggressive materials.

The TDR instruments, commonly called 'Radar on a Rope', are suitable for applications ranging from hot bitumen and beer and solids through to wet slurries and fine dry ceramic dust. Capable of measuring the contents of containers up to 24 metres deep, the instrument can be used in pressurised containers, to 40 bar, and with product temperatures up to 600°C.

The FMCW Radar instruments are non-contact with Wave Stick or Horn antennas. They are suitable for measuring hydrocarbons, fuming acids and other such chemicals. The system has patented software that is said to enable superior object differentiation compared to conventional pulse systems. This allows the instrument to track the product surface in vessels with complex internal structures and with materials having low dielectric constants. The FMCW instruments are also capable of operating through high pressure and high temperature environments.
