One Planet Products launches its training event on One Planet Living for residential development

Sustainable construction specialists, One Planet Products® are running a one day training event to help the UK residential development industry play their part in achieving sustainable resource use and One Planet Living®. Increasingly becoming an important consideration for anyone involved in residential housing development, the One Planet Living framework has been adopted by the Housing Corporation as part of their 2012 commitments3, and is supported by DEFRA4. Speakers at the event will include key representatives from BioRegional DevelopmentGroup5, the Housing Corporation, BioRegional Quintain Ltd6, a leading developer of One Planet Living Communities, and Sustainable Homes 7.

This training event would be useful to all those involved in residential construction with One Planet Living becoming a key consideration not just for housing associations but developers and constructors alike. One Planet Living is a joint initiative by BioRegional and WWF and is based on the concept that if everyone lived as we do in the UK, we would need three planets in order to support us. The One Planet Living framework and the 10 guiding principles can be applied to a project with the aim of reducing its ecological impact to a sustainable and globally equitable level.

Ian Pearson, Climate Change and Environment Minister belives that ' If we are to move towards what BioRegional and WWF8 call 'One Planet Living', we need to make it easier for individuals and businesses to make sustainable choices and that is what One Planet Products is helping to achieve."

One Planet Living is increasingly being recognised as a valuable concept when creating sustainable developments and communities with environmental, social, and economic benefits. The Continual Professional Development (CPD) event will explain to developers, housing associations and businesses involved in residential construction the relevance and importance of incorporating One Planet Living in new developments. This will include a presentation from the Housing Corporation, who expect all bidders to its 2008 National Affordable Housing Programme to sign up to the 2012 Construction Commitments which require that “projects will be designed in accordance with the concept of One Planet Living”.

The CPD event will give delegates an introduction to the concept One Planet Living and each of the 10 guiding principles, look at the process of planning a One Planet Living development, provide examples of 3 current UK developments which utilize the One Planet Living framework, as well as looking at the future of residential construction and sustainability.

The event will also provide practical suggestions for how businesses can engage and incorporate One Planet Living in their developments, including an interactive session from One Planet Products on how to select construction materials and products which help apply the One Planet Living principles. Delegates will have the opportunity to raise questions throughout the event and to the expert panel during the dedicated Q&A session.

The CPD event will provide 4 hours of CPD training and will be held on 20th September 2007 at BedZed in Surrey. For further details on the CPD event and One Planet Products please contact Antonin Pujol on 020 8404 5044 or email ap@oneplanetproducts.com.
