MRS Announces Undergraduate Materials Research Initiative

The Materials Research Society (MRS) has announced its 2001-2002 Undergraduate Materials Research Initiative (UMRI). UMRI is designed to introduce undergraduates to the excitement of discovery through research in materials science and engineering by providing funds for research and subsequent awards.

MRS will award approximately 40 UMRI grants for projects during the 2001 fiscal year. Each award recipient will receive a grant for the cost of a moderate research project of no more than US$750 plus an additional subsequent personal award of US$250 payable directly to the undergraduate researcher upon completion of the project.

Cost sharing is encouraged but will not influence the selection of successful proposals. UMRI applicants do not need to be MRS members and do not need to be majoring in materials science and engineering to qualify for these grants. Undergraduates of any major who wish to conduct research related to materials science are eligible to apply. The main thrust of UMRI is to make research experience available to the largest possible number of eligible undergraduates.

The deadline for proposal submission is 15 October 2001.

Complete application details and full instructions for this programme can be found by visiting the following pages on the MRS web site: http://www.mrs.org/umri/2002
