CERAM Helps Industry Get Landfill Right
CERAM's Testing and Environmental Division has come to the rescue of companies lost in the maze of landfill legislation, by providing testing of materials to the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) under the Landfill (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2004.From 16th July 2005, companies wishing to have their waste accepted at Landfill sites must produce a sampling plan for testing and characterising their waste to establish that it meets the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
The WAC comprises a set of leaching limits and other parameters to define which wastes may be accepted at inert, non-hazardous and hazardous landfill. Landfills are classified according to whether they can accept hazardous, non-hazardous or inert wastes.
The types of waste that can be accepted at Landfill include granular (waste in its raw state) and monolithic (treated waste). There are formal processes for identifying and checking waste that must be followed before waste can be accepted.
CERAM can carry out a suite of tests to test and characterise waste to the WAC for both granular and monolithic types of waste.
The Landfill directive sets rigorous standards to reduce our reliance on landfill and the environmental impacts of wastes disposed in this way. Tighter operational and infrastructure standards will limit the types and nature of the waste we can send to landfill and place greater restrictions on the location of landfill.
