Kao-Tab Used in Harsh Furnace Environments

High alumina dense castables such as Thermal Ceramics' Kao-Tab products are often needed in tough furnace applications where chemical attack or elevated temperatures are a potential problem. The Kao-Tab castable lines, based on chemically and thermally stable tabular alumina aggregate, have very low levels of alkali and titania impurities, as well as very small amounts of silica. This makes them very resistant to reducing atmospheres and also produces high hot strengths.

Typical applications for the range include: cat cracker transfer lines where more abrasion resistance is needed; secondary ammonia reformer linings where low silica is desired; recovery boiler; upper furnace walls; lower furnace walls and floor; and cyclone boilers.

Kao-Tab 95 and Kao-Tab 95 Gun are, respectively, alumina castables designed for casting and gunning (the latter can be hand rammed if required). These products maintain their strengths up to 1870C and are also said to feature good resistance to reducing atmospheres. Typical applications are in hydrogen transfer lines and secondary ammonia reformers - due to their low silica content - and sulphur recovery units due to their temperature resistance and purity.

Kao-Tab SR is an 88% alumina castable also known as the 'Red Devil Mix' and is designed for placement by gunning or hand ramming. It features excellent resistance to both acid and basic types of slag found in coal fired recovery and cyclone boilers.

Kao-Tab HDHS-98 is a very high purity, 98% alumina castable with high hot strengths. It is said to be excellent for hydrogen atmospheres in the chemical processing industry or high temperature applications in the iron and steel, cement and copper industries. It can also be pre-cast into shapes and used in tough applications such as a carbon black reactor.
