File Clai Celtic Ceramics Project

The File Clai Project has announced that following a hugely successful Professional Development Forum held in July, a follow-up Professional Skills Day has been planned for 3 September 2005 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre (Ceredigion, Wales). Professional photographer Martin Avery will be taking photographs in digital and film formats of delegates' own ceramics; running in tandem with this will be a workshop/seminar conducted by John Wheeldon, who will be demonstrating decorating techniques and firing his raku kiln.

The project, which combines the Irish word 'file' meaning festival and a Welsh word 'clai' meaning clay, is concerned with supporting new and emerging makers in ceramics. It is an innovative and exciting joint Welsh/Irish initiative which aims to offer guidance to individuals by organising festivals, one/two-day events and exhibitions as well as providing artist in residency schemes. The project will also be addressing the wider issues of environmental sustainability and equal opportunities in ceramics.

In March 2006, File Clai will be holding a two-day hands-on workshop - along with other activities - at Aberystwyth while in September 2006 a major new 'Emerging Makers Exhibition' made up of Irish and Welsh contributors will open in Ireland. This exhibition will travel to Wales the following November.
