Successful Launch of Whitewares Waste Initiative

Last month's launch of a waste minimisation initiative - designed to help ceramic whitewares companies save money by improving their environmental performance - was reportedly a great success.

Called 'Premice', the launch was attended by approximately 30 representatives from whitewares producers such as Twyfords, Royal Worcester, Wedgwood and American Standard Plumbing UK.

Premice is aimed at both manufacturers of whitewares and suppliers of whitewares materials and companies which were unable to attend the launch can still join. Companies implementing a waste minimisation programme such as Premice could regularly achieve net cost savings of at least five times their disposal costs, according to the scheme's leaders.

The initiative has been set up by the Environment Agency, Envirowise, Groundwork Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Business & Environment Network, with the support of the British Ceramic Confederation.

SMEs (companies with less than 250 employees) are the principal target for the scheme, although larger companies are also welcome to join. It aims to recruit up to two delegates per company from up to 15 companies.

The joining fee per company is £100 for SMEs and £250 for non-SMEs. Membership is said to actually be worth over £4,000 per company, but is available at these low rates due to European and Government funding. Those wishing to join the initiative can contact Beth Gronow (Tactical Planning Officer for the Environment Agency) on: 01543 404964.
