Boral Chief Speaks at Climate Change Conference

Rod Pearse, CEO and Managing Director of Boral Ltd (Sydney, NSW, Australia), spoke on 25 July 2007 at the Citi Conference on Climate Change.

Discussing a number of topics and explaining Boral's approach, Rod Pearse also presented a short case study on the Union City Brick plant which uses 33% landfill gas to fuel its kiln.

The main facts include:

• Boral's new US Brick plant at Union City, Oklahoma built in 2006 significantly enhanced Boral's know-how around using landfill gas in brick production.

• Union City plant currently replacing around 33% fossil fuels with methane gas from solid waste landfill located two miles from the plant. Over time, Boral expects landfill to supply approximately 60% of kiln energy requirements.

• Boral's competitiveness has been strengthened due to cost reductions and sustainability outcomes.

• Success of Union City project is leading to the next growth project – a new brick plant at Terre Haute, Indiana, USA – being located adjacent to existing landfill operation to allow plant to be fuelled by up to 100% renewable energy.
