AMACO Announces Programme for Providing Consumer Product Safety Commission Certificates

AMACO (American Art Clay Co Inc), based in Indianapolis, IN, USA, has announced the implementation of a state-of-the-art programme for providing Consumer Product Safety Commission Certificates for distributors of AMACO products. Hundreds of AMACO glazes, clays, modelling and sculpting materials are approved lead free and non-toxic by the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) which evaluates safe formulations of art materials manufactured for use by children.

Compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 mandates distributors of children's art materials to produce certificates of conformity. To certify that AMACO ships lead free products in compliance, AMACO has created an on-line, password-protected digital data bank to give certificate access to all distributors.

Steve Lampron, the Vice President of AMACO Technical Services, said: "Before I ever came to AMACO, the company was proactive about formulating lead-free glazes; so that before it was federally mandated, all AMACO glaze formulations met the criteria for what could potentially become 2011 federal standards".

AMACO was one of the founding members of ACMI, through which art products are evaluated, tested and reviewed by a toxicologist to establish their safety and labelling according to federal regulation. Mr Lampron, a nationally recognised ceramic engineer, works closely with ACMI consulting toxicologists at Duke University to ensure that AMACO clay, art glazes and modelling materials adhere to strict federal guidelines for "AP" lead free and non toxic formulations. AMACO makes nearly 600 lead free glaze formulations for school and professional use and, adds the company, has become the standard for quality and reliability in American schools.
