Exports of U.S. made ceramic tile increased 7.6% in value on a 1.6% gain in unit volume. Canada, the largest export market, boosted spending by 19.1%

The volume of imported ceramic tile plummeted by 554 million square feet in 2007 while dollar value fell 17.1% - the deepest contraction in 25 years. Glazed and unglazed tiles both posted double-digit declines, but mosaic tiles climbed 24.3%. China became the third largest ceramic tile supplier to the U.S. as shipments edged up 1.4%. Italy, Brazil, Spain, Turkey, Thailand, Colombia, and Indonesia all reported declines in excess of 20% while Mexico saw sales slip 2.7%.

GranitiFiandre reported excellent progress for its American subsidiary, StonePeak, as sales reached $61.1 million in 2007. Mohawk Industries' Dal-Tile division posted a 2% gain in fourth quarter sales, with sales off 0.2% for the year.
