Strong Start to 2005 for UK Construction Products

The UK construction products industry has enjoyed a buoyant start to 2005 with further steady progress expected during the second quarter, according to the Construction Products Association's new Construction Activity Barometer.

Commenting on the survey findings, the CPA's Economics Director Allan Wilen said: "The construction products industry saw a sustained increase in sales volumes during the first quarter of 2005 compared with a year ago, with the Barometer index at 55, firmly above the 50 no-change mark. Light side manufacturers have seen the strongest sales growth, with an index rating of 70, benefitting from increased housing RM&I and government investment in health and education. In contrast the heavy side sales growth has been weighed down by poor road and rail investment activity, with an index ranking of 48.

"The construction products industry anticipates a positive sales performance during the second quarter. At 58 the Barometer index reveals an expectation that sales volumes will remain ahead of last year. Growth expectations are strongest among light side firms, with an index reading of 67. Heavy side firms anticipate more modest growth, with an index reading of 55."
