Ibstock Brick Pioneers Use of Space Age Technology to Save Energy

Ibstock Brick Limited, the UK’s leading brick manufacturer, is pioneering the use of EMISSHIELD© - a high emissivity coating material developed by NASA for protecting next generation space vehicles during re-entry to the earth’s atmosphere – to reduce energy losses and increase efficiency on their brick firing kilns.

Dr Denzil Spencer, on behalf of Ibstock, commented that the application of EMISSHIELD© to coat the refractory lining of one of their tunnel kilns yielded significant energy savings as well as improving furnace efficiency and temperature distribution in the kiln.

EMISSHIELD© is manufactured under licence by Wessex Inc and available via Harbison-Walker (UK). Alec Bowden, Managing Director of Harbison-Walker, commended Ibstock Brick for their leadership and initiative in adopting this technology. He said ‘EMISSHIELD© has potential benefits for all kilns and processes utilising heat energy, especially during this period of escalating energy costs, but Ibstock were the first company to recognise and invest in those benefits to reduce energy consumption and increase their kilning efficiency.
