Course on Ceramic Metal Joining

The Center for Professional Advancement will hold a three-day practical course on Ceramic Metal Joining in Amsterdam from 13-15 June 2001. The course will first review the various technical ceramics now available, many of which are comparatively new to the market and non-oxide in nature, thus requiring special attention with regard to bonding to metals.

Emphasis is given to the peculiarities of the ceramics that can complicate the joining process. The suitability of various metals and alloys for high temperature joining to ceramics is discussed and a semi-quantitative figure of merit, the thermomechanical compatibility factor (TCF) is introduced.

Bonding processes are described with emphasis on refractory (moly-manganese) metallisation and active brazing. Details, limitations and variations of these processes will be discussed along with process control procedures.

An update lecture on ceramic joint design will be presented, providing several approaches for dealing with the problem of thermal expansion mismatch in ceramic joints.

Quality testing and post mortem analysis of ceramic-to-metal will be reviewed.

Finally, a broad variety of ceramic/metal joints and devices will be on exhibit for discussion and the lecturers will be available to discuss process problems, designs and the like in open forum (preferred) or privately, time permitting.
