Institute of Materials Award for former CERAM Employee

CERAM is pleased to announce that one of its former employees, Wilf Roberts, has received the Roy T. Holland Award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

This Award is given to those rare and respected individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the ceramics industry, particularly Whitewares.

Wilf Roberts joined CERAM's Whitewares Division in 1949, successfully managing glaze, decoration and tableware Research & Development; in 1985 he was appointed Head of Division. Wilf is especially recognised for his contributions in the field of glazes and decoration. This included important work on the control of lead and cadmium release from tableware glazes and decoration when release limits were first introduced in the 1970s.

One particular success in the decoration field was the development of the "Total Transfer Process" for the mechanical decoration of tableware. This CERAM Research licensed process is used worldwide and won a Queen's Award for Technological Achievement in 1987.

In the 1990s, work on porous plastic moulds and pressure casting was transferred to industry through the CERAM Technology product range. Wilf's outstanding contribution to the industry was acknowledged in the award of an MBE in 1991; he retired from CERAM in 1993.
