Discovery Awards Presented at DECO 2002


The Society of Glass & Ceramic Decorators (SGCD) honoured Discovery Award winners, including many entries in tableware categories, during its annual show and technical seminar in Arlington, VA, USA, 23-26 February. The 2002 awards programme it total featured 320 entries in 15 design and 7 technical categories.

In addition to the design and technical categories, SGCD also honoured two Discovery entries for overall merit and these awards were taken by tableware decorators. All ware was displayed and winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed each category and selected winners by consensus.

The ceramic tableware awards were:

Food Containers - Décor America for Pomona soup tureen decorated for Portmeirion.

Casual Tableware - Oneida for four-piece Martin house dinnerware created using an inglaze, four-colour decal which is applied to the Buffalo rolled edge shape and fired through a fast-fire kiln.

Casual Tableware - Libbey Inc for Pine Cone plate setting.

Formal Tableware - Lenox China for Serpentine five-place setting with waterslide decal and hand enamel.

Food Service, Casual - H J Amann for Aladdin flora pattern for the Sterling China Company.

Food Service, Formal - The Homer Laughlin China Company for Victorian lady plate with computer designed centre, decal printed by four-colour process and a rim decal. Gold lines were hand applied.

The 'Best of Show' Vandenoever Award went to Lenox China for its White House commissioned 'Clinton Service' tableware commemorating the White House's 100th anniversary. The ware is decorated with raised paste and hand applied precious metal.
