Sculpted in Clay

The Millennium Galleries, Sheffield, England will celebrate the skill, versatility and imagination of those working in clay in an exhibition of work by some of the leading artists in this field. 'Sculpted in Clay' will showcase work that demonstrates the broad range of styles and visual imagination of these artists. The exhibition will run from 6 May to 23 July 2006.

Each of the five artists featured in this exhibition has a long term relationship with this medium. Their work, says the gallery management, is sculptural, highly skilled, innovative and visually stunning. Sculpted in Clay will show different styles and ways of working, demonstrating how ceramics can be at the forefront of fine art.

Sculpted in Clay will include work that is sculptural, by artists including Felicity Aylieff, Kate Malone, Carol McNicoll and Daniel Allen.

Felicity Aylieff is Professor of Ceramics at the Royal College of Art and is known for her research into developing pioneer surface textures by adding aggregates to the clay body. Carol McNicoll casts everyday objects, transforming them into intriguing ceramics. Carol, alongside other women ceramicists, helped to transform the British ceramics scene in the late 1970s and a major retrospective of her work was shown by the Crafts Council in their recent Show5 series of exhibitions. Kate Malone makes colourful, vibrant pots, inspired by nature, chemistry and the transformation of clay to ceramic. Daniel Allen’s figurative sculptures are stunning self portraits which make direct reference to his life and the world around him. His work pushes the technical boundaries of working in clay.
