CIMTEC Won't Ignore Traditional Side of Industry

The Italian organisers of CIMTEC 2002 have provided more detailed information on one of the key symposia for next year's event - Science and New Technologies for Silicate Ceramics.

In their introduction, they say that with an annual world market of around US$100 billion, traditional ceramics still account for over 80% of the overall turnover of the ceramic industry on a global basis. Further expansion is also predicted on the back of growing demand coming from new as well as established consumer countries. Technology innovation during the last two decades has been a formidable key for growth. Manufacturing cycles have undergone drastic changes with progressive quality optimisation being aimed at the ultimate goal of 'zero defect' products.

International competition challenges traditional producers to further promote quality and technical innovation. The purpose of this symposium is to focus interest on the ongoing R&D activities and achievements aimed at furthering technical progress in the whitewares and heavy clay sectors. The material will cover work directed at improving knowledge on the properties and behaviour of materials and products, to assure quality, to develop new types of products, as well as actions aimed at implementing new technologies in ceramics manufacturing.

Sectors of industry interest will be:

  • Wall and Floor Tile
  • Sanitaryware
  • Tableware
  • Brick and Roofing Tile
  • Raw Materials
  • Glazes, Pigments and Colours

    The following sessions are planned:

  • Science of Silicate Ceramics
  • Raw Materials
  • Research for Quality and New Products
  • Research for New Technology

A special event named 'Ceramic Tile Day' is also being planned. The symposium is open to the participation of researchers from both academia and industry technicians and other professionals from ceramic companies and suppliers of machinery, raw materials and glazes for the ceramic industry. Details for the submission of papers will be put up on the CIMTEC web pages.
