Joint Venture in UAE: Inauguration of RAK Chimica

Smaltochimica SpA (Spezzano di Fiorano, MO, Italy) started its expansion policy in the 1990s with a plant in Spain and other production sites in the most significant ceramic districts in the world, such as Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Indonesia and Russia.

Nowadays, says the company, it is increasingly important for Italian companies to invest and promote their products in countries where there is high commercial potential and large consumption volumes. In order to continue this expansion, Smaltochimica has undertaken a new initiative in the UAE. This new plant is located in the industrial district in Ras Al Khaimah and is equipped with numerous laboratories and a fully automated plant for the production of chemicals for the ceramic industry, mainly decoration media and liquid fluidifiers.

The inauguration of the new joint venture company - RAK Chimica - took place on 3 March 2007, in the presence of Dr Khater Massad, CEO of RAK Ceramics and Dr Ivano Piccinini, President of Smaltochimica SpA. The participation of His Highness the Sheikh Omar Bin Saqr Al Kassimi at the opening ceremony confirmed the tremendous importance of the event and the interest generated in the UAE can be put down to such collaborations with Italian companies.

The JV between Smaltochimica group and RAK Ceramics represents a profitable business relationship for both companies, allowing Smaltochimica new sales possibilities and RAK Ceramics production improvements thanks to the know-how and expertise of Smaltochimica's laboratories. RAK Ceramics is a world leader in the production of ceramic tiles and sanitaryware. The Ras Al Khaimah plant alone currently produces around 200,000 sq m of tiles per day and over 7,000 pieces of sanitaryware per day. The local production of chemicals will no doubt improve Smaltochimica's competitiveness in the Middle East markets and guarantee the quality of its products and its excellent technical service, concluded the company.
