Glass Technologies - Controlled Release of Actives
In many applications, across industries such as healthcare, home care and agriculture, it is highly desirable to control dosage over time of active ingredients delivered from formulations. Examples could include the metering of fluoride or other nutrients from toothpaste or the control of anti-bacterial agents from underarm deodorants. A fundamental challenge facing formulators and product developers is how to control the dose and how to ensure even delivery over a controlled period.
At Ceram, we are developing bioglasses and bioceramics for use as carriers for a variety of active ingredients. This new technology, which is an alternative to polymer delivery systems, has many advantages and has been successfully used in agriculture and other applications.
Development of Innovation
Degradation of glass products subjected to harsh working conditions, such as the solubilising power of alcoholic beverages over long periods of storage, is a well known challenge to those manufacturing high-quality wine glasses, crystal decanters and the like.
Ceram has worked at the cutting edge of developments to avoid these issues and as a result has built unrivalled understanding and expertise in development and modification of glass formulations to build in toughness and durability.
Turning this knowledge on its head, we have developed a range of glass formulations specifically to degrade over time - and over very well controlled time periods - that can further be modified to contain within the glass matrix a range of additive materials that release as the glass degrades. Typically our glasses are created in powder form, though alternative formats can be discussed.
The Result
Our special glass formulations can be tailored to your needs, to degrade over the timescales you want, in the working environment you need and to deliver the active ingredients you select.
Our technology can give your products the winning competitive edge, delivering unique and valuable benefits to your customers, controlled at the time they really need them.
