Organic Gases

At Ceram, our experts have extensive experience in the analysis of organic gases, including the sampling and testing of landfill gas and biogas and the monitoring of biogas purification processes, as well as providing consultancy across a diverse range of landfill gas and biogas projects.

Organic gases are incredibly important in environmental terms because they are the major causes of global warming and environmental pollution. Landfill gas (LFG) is produced from the anaerobic digestion of wet organic waste within a landfill. The gas produced contains methane, carbon dioxide and a cocktail of volatile organic trace compounds but can also contain other organic species such as Halogenated Fluorinated Compounds (HFCs) and odorous sulphur containing compounds; over 500 trace compounds have been detected in LFG. This can lead to problems such as a risk to health, odour issues and fire or explosion risk.

As biogas is often generated from waste sources it can contain harmful compounds, such as halogenated organic compounds and volatile siloxanes, that can either damage equipment or constitute a hazard. Monitoring is often required to determine what mitigation procedures are required to clean the gas to enable it to be used, whether clean-up protocols are working efficiently and whether filter media requires regenerating/replacing. Gas also needs to be monitored for quality to ensure it is of sufficient calorific value to allow it to be burnt for energy.

Organic Gases Projects at Ceram

  • routine landfill gas sampling and testing
  • annual monitoring of landfill gas contamination for adherence to Environment Agency Technical Guidance note 04
  • monitoring of volatile siloxanes in biogas
  • analysis of landfill gas and biogas to determine the calorific value
  • analysis of landfill gas and biogas to identify and quantify the concentrations of odorous and toxic sulphurous compounds
  • analysis of passive samplers for occupational levels and migration of industrial odours.
