Modelling of Refractory Structures

Refractory lining systems are typically exposed to a thermal environment that results in expansion of the refractory lining system. As a result, a lining investigation typically consists of two parts: thermal and structural analysis.

In a thermo-mechanical analysis of refractory linings, the thermal profile and thermal expansion stresses can be estimated with textbook equations. However, these can quite often be limited to both simplified boundary conditions and material behaviour and, therefore, can underestimate the complex structural behaviour of the most simple refractory lining systems. Thus, even for a very simple lining geometry, the complex mechanical behaviour of the lining system, along with the temperature dependent mechanical behaviour of the refractory material, make these textbook equations unrealistic in their applicability.

At CERAM, our experts make use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to assess the complex thermo-mechanical behaviour of refractory lined vessels and other industrial refractory structures. Through the combination of state-of-the-art modelling software, refractory consultants and in-house physical testing, we can offer the following services through our modelling service:

  • failure analysis
  • design verification/validation
  • performance improvement
  • product development for material manufacturers
  • research.

The type of projects that we have been involved in include:

  • stress analysis in glass furnaces crown structures
  • effect of shell deformation on brick lining in rotary kiln
  • effect of rain shield on shell temperature
  • gas tracking behind castable linings
  • steel flow through tundish nozzles
  • flexing of steel treatment lances
  • thermal expansion of refractory lining in blast furnace
  • heat transfer of molten steel to refractory block
  • anchor spacing in monolithic linings
  • tensile forces on monolithic linings during dry-out.
