Glass

The current economic downturn has had an effect on nearly every industry, including the glass industry with the flat glass sector in particular, dependent on the construction and automotive markets, being heavily affected. At Ceram we understand that glass making today is a highly competitive business and that’s why we’re working hard with glass manufacturers and users to ensure that products are right-first time, processes are optimised and failures and waste are kept to a minimum.

The testing & analysis and consultancy services that we offer to the glass industry are diverse, thanks to our experience of raw materials, glass powders, frits and glassy materials, our analytical capabilities, testing facilities and consultancy experience.

Refractory Services

With expertise in all areas relating to the testing, selection and usage of refractories, we can provide independent evaluation of refractory performance, interpretation, advice, modelling and training services.
Our UKAS accredited testing facility (UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 0013) is used by glass makers worldwide, to improve their profitability. We provide a full suite of simulative service tests and high temperature physical property measurements, including glass corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance and glass quality.

Materials Characterisation and Formulation

Our materials experts can advise on how properties of different materials can affect and enhance performance. Using chemical analysis, microstructural and surface analysis, we can ensure correct material selection and optimise material performance.

Failure Analysis

At Ceram, we know how costly, both in terms of time and money, faults and failures can be to your business. We can work to help determine the cause of inclusions and contamination in glass, identifying the source of the problem, whether it be batch or refractory related.

Coatings Analysis

Coated glass finds use in many industries, from the automotive to the construction to the electronics industry. Using the latest surface analysis techniques, our experts can characterise glass surfaces and the integrity of coatings, ensuring performance optimisation and identifying impurities and contaminants. We are also able to identify corrosion processes and cleaning problems.

Physical Testing

The invention of the float glass process, followed by curtain walling glazing systems, has led to the incorporation of large areas of glass products in the design of many buildings. Like other construction products, glass needs to be tested to ensure that it is fit for purpose, can comply with regulations and conform to exacting quality standards. We offer a diverse range of physical tests, from wind load testing to weatherability tests.
