Innovation for Healthcare

Ceram is leading the way in materials innovation by developing a portfolio of new materials and technologies for its clients - particularly in the healthcare industries - medical devices, personal care and pharmaceuticals.

We are presenting the results of our work at a number of conferences this year - find out more.

Our New Technologies Group is working on the following projects:

  • Novel bioceramic materials - for bone repair/replacement applications. Our new toughened ceramic and ceramic polymer hybrids can be utilised in many ways by orthopaedic device manufacturers and producers of artifical bone repair materials. This new materials technology will substantially eliminate the risks of a medical device failing, thanks to improved bioactivity and tailored mechanical properties.
  • New multi-element-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA) - With newly-patented technology, we can now modify/change HA’s surface charge potential (the key factor affecting biocompatibility and bioactivity) by introducing different elements into the CaP lattice.  This technology not only allows the HA, with tailored bioactivity, to be used for bone replacement materials applications but also provides a platform for a range of other applications, such as new drug delivery systems with tailored bio-application requirements.
  • Controlling powders in suspension - leading the way in powders innovation. Powder suspensions represent an important process step in the medical devices and personal care products industries.
  • Bioglass/ceramic controlled release technology - bioglasses and bioceramics for use as carriers for a variety of active ingredients.  This new technology, which is an alternative to polymer delivery systems, has many advantages and has been succesfully used in agriculture and other applications. We have now developed a range of bioglasses and bioceramics for drug delivery systems, including the targeting of drugs, super long-life drugs, smart drugs, etc.
